Endurance & Inner Travels – To The Ancestors (Golden Ratio Frequencies)

a3004380011_10

Label Description:

After a period of quiet, and just in time for summer Solstice, Golden Ratio Frequencies is thrilled to return to releasing physical (or is that metaphysical?) music, announcing the release of TO THE ANCESTORS, an immersive suite of ambient electronics by Endurance & Inner Travels.
A trans-international collaboration between Canadian-born, Japanese-based Joshua Stefane, aka Endurance, and American based artist Steve Targo, aka Inner Travels, To The Ancestors see’s the duo turn in a serene and zen inducing listening experience, delicately blending flavours of traditional Japanese music influences with contemporary electronics and sound design.

In the artist’s words, TO THE ANCESTORS is “An exploration into synthetic nature”, drawing inspiration from, and conjuring the emotional resonance of, forest bathing, zen garden sitting, and the historical elegance of the Gagaku and Koto music of Edo period Japan. The album seamlessly merges these influences with moods of the environmental music movement Kankyō Ongaku of the 1980s and 1990s and then passed through a filter of modern electronics, digital processes and patch cables resulting in a collection of meditative pieces that evoke a sense of calm, introspection and peace.

Composed between 2018 and 2020, the album’s eight tracks, titled only by their duration, are rich in texture and shimmering with radiance. Utilising modular, analog and digital synthesis, Stefane and Targo conjure sounds that feel both distinctly processed, yet organic in nature, and in doing so, embody the Japanese traditions and practices of Wabi-Sabi. Digital flutes breathe through self-generative CV patched Gewa blocks while fountains of ethereal granular plucked koto like sounds cascade and glide over serene synthesised sparkles, drips, and tweets in a mimicry of the natural world bringing a harmonious meeting of human and machine, nature and virtual landscapes. Through40 minutes, these aural infusions hint at shades of Hiroshi Yoshimura, Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa and other greats of the Japanese ambient golden era.

Prepare your favourite(sic) Temea ceremonial tea, relax and enter a state of serenity. This is environmental meditation music for the digital now-age.

Joshua Stefane, known for his work as Endurance, is a prolific Ontario, Canada born producer and curator currently residing in Nara, Japan. One of the founders of cult ambient cassette tape label Muzan Editions, Stefane has been instrumental in organising(sic) and supporting various events, happenings, and festivals in his adopted home, (such as the annual Moment Festival held in the majestic Tenkawa village) and being a vital, nurturing connector to an international community of forward thinking electronic ambient artists and DJs.

Steve Targo, performing as Inner Travels, and more recently as Nimbudala, is an American, Wisconsin based artist and explorer of inner and outer worlds. He has been creating New Age and spiritual-adjacent visionary music for years, releasing meditative works for cassette tape on labels such as Aural Canyon, Sounds of The Dawn, Fluere Tapes, and Inner Islands. A true purveyor and practitioner of futurist healing sounds.
TO THE ANCESTORS will be available in both digital and physical realms. Physical copies will be released exclusively through bandcamp as a limited edition pro-dubbed C90 cassette, featuring translucent smokey shell, on-body print, 4-panel full-colour inlay and as always, a screen-printed Golden Ratio Spiral acetate, continuing Golden Ratio Frequencies’ tradition of offering quality, visually appealing sonic totems.

Pre- Order available 21 June 2024, with full release and shipping from 5th July 2024.

Canadian experimental guitarists Aidan Baker (Nadja, Caudal, Tavare) & Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy) originally formed Hypnodrone Ensemble in Berlin, Germany in 2014, along with the drummers Felipe Salazar (Caudal), Jérémie Mortier, and David Dunnett, to explore the conjunctions of atmospheric space-rock and shoegaze with motorik, krautrock-ish, propulsive beats to offer immersive, psychedelic, and transportive performances. While these five musicians formed the original core of the group, members have regularly changed over the years and, besides stalwarts Baker and Quach, currently features Angela Martinez Muñoz (nunofyrbeeswax, Tavare), Fiona McKenzie (Halma) and Sara Neidorf (Mellowdeath, Aptera). This line-up, along with bassist Gareth Sweeney (Caudal) and guest vocalist Lane Shi Otayonii (otay:onii, Elizabeth Colour Wheel), toured in Europe in the spring of 2023 with a pause on 1 May for a recording session set up by Heartnoize at Punctum in Prague, CZ.

The result is The Problem Is in the Sender – Do Not Tamper with the Receiver, featuring material from the May 2023 Punctum sessions and to be released on vinyl by Wolves & Vibrancy (DE), CD by WV Sorcerer (FR), and cassette by Katuktu Collective (US) and Cruel Nature (UK)

Ghost Dubs – Damaged (Pressure)

a3113517095_10

Label Description:

Ghost Dubs, real name Michael Fiedler, aka Jah Schulz, announces a rebirth with ‘Damaged’, his first album for The Bug’s PRESSURE label..

Having recently dropped two criminally overlooked, experimental dub LPs, with his ‘Dub Over Science’ series, the German producer/bass specialist, now stretches his own parameters of outwardness still further, with these twelve fresh explorations of dub deviance.

For those who feel the fusion of dub techno and ambient drone had creatively ended with the demise of the short lived, Berlin based Chain Reaction label. Ghost Dubs now upgrades, and extends that legendary blueprint’s abstract methodology even further and deeper, floating away upon a wonderfully warm sea of hiss and static bliss. This is dub so atomized that it disintegrates within your eardrums. Its music, where the machines take over and virtually all traces of humanity are erased. But thankfully, the warmest soul still oozes seductively from the pores of Fiedler’s robo riddims. Relentlessly hypnotic, seriously sedated, ‘Damaged’ celebrates the point of departure within it’s mesmerising low end grooves.

Album opener ‘Chemical’, provides an opiated slo-mo skank, which sounds like Plastikman’s ‘Consumed’ era pulsations drenched heavily in sub aquatic fx. A triumph of surface noise surfing and sub woofer testing relentlessness, it provides the perfect intro to this compellingly immersive album. For batty shakers and headtrippers alike, there’s added thrills aplenty, as Ghost Dub’s richter scale tremor rhythms remain impressively massive, and the atmospheric depths of ‘Damaged’ appear tantalisingly(sic) oceanic.

Throughout the duration of the dreamy selection, there is an obsessive balance of bewitching ambience and heavyweight bassbin shaking. The lead single ‘Thin Line’ itself provides a missing link between African Headcharge’s early percussive body probes and Rhythm & Sound’s addictive radiance, with the slightest hint of Burial’s doomed romantic hauntology added for good taste. Alternately, and no less gracefully, ‘Dub Lobotomy’ bizarrely resembles Miles Davis ‘Get Up with it’ chopped, screwed, and relocated to a futuristic Kingston Town. Impressive indeed, Fiedler’s mastery of live dubbing on his mixing desk shines accross(sic) the duration, and gives the album an improvised edge, and sense of peripheral chaos. Elsewhere, spooked steppars(‘Hot Wired’), haunting house (‘True to life’) and 4th World psychogeography(‘Undone’), combine to ensure there is a forever changing mixture of flavours percolating within the admirable consistancy(sic) of the overall sound.

With a tip of the cap, and nod of the head to Pole(‘Second Thoughts’), its no surprise then that PRESSURE would then turn to the great, Berlin based producer Stefan Betke, to master/cut this collection at his infamous Scape mastering room. And a fine job he did too, as high quality sound and levels are definitely maintained throughout.

If you like your melodies submerged, your dub narcotic, your basslines obese, and your beats evaporating, ‘Damaged’ provides the perfect prescription and entry point into Ghost Dub’s spectral soundworld.

Dive in. Enjoy !

Jarl – Neurotransmitters-Sphere-Music (Reverse Alignment)

a2498086156_10

Label Description:

“Neurotransmitters-Sphere-Music” is Jarl’s sixth album on Reverse Alignment, following on from 2021’s CD release “Spectrum Confusion”. And once again Karolina Urbaniak has masterfully created the cover artwork, as she’s done for the five earlier Jarl releases for Reverse Alignment.
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that help nerve cells communicate with each other. Referring to this concept, “Neurotransmitters Sphere Music” consists of four pieces showcasing his trademark psychedelic, hypnotic approach, based on minimal sequencing, analogue pulsating synthesizers chords and repetitive percussive layers.

Swedish musician Erik Jarl has been active since the Fall of 1999, principally as Jarl. He was also a member of post-industrial act IRM, of which Erik was one of the founding members. Jarl’s music has been released on several labels through the years, and he has collaborated with acts like Anemone Tube, Envenomist, and Skin Area. Erik Jarl composes his music through a total analogue approach with the use of synthesizers, analogue sequencers, waveform generators, and oscillators, as well as several echo/reverb and delay units.

Rapoon – Dream Circle (In Three Phases) [Zoharum]

a1878451718_10

Label Description:

We are proud to present the unique RAPOON publication “Dream Circle” (In three Phases)”, a special edition of the British artist’s debut album, containing a total of 3 CDs: a remastered version of the debut “Dream Circle”, the sequel “Recurring (Dream Circle)” and a specially prepared version of thinking about this release, the album “Mandala”, which is an extension of the formula contained in previous releases. As in the case of the extended reissues of RAPOON (“Vernal Crossing Revisited” or “The Kirghiz Light”), the musician had a similar idea there, also here, to record new compositions, Robin Storey reached into his archive to extract the tracks and sound banks that he used during those sessions almost 30 years ago, to use them in a completely different way with their help, compose completely new, interesting and coherent musical material. “Mandala” draws listeners into a mystical journey to the Middle East with the same intensity as “Dream Circle” and “Recurring…”. The discs put together in this way close the triptych started at the very beginning of Rapoon’s activity. This unique trilogy was released in a black and gold 8-panel digipack.
In addition, an extended collector’s edition in a wooden box will also be available, containing several bonuses.

Voltage Control – Voltage Control 1990-1992 LP (Mannequin Records)

a2634997080_10

Label Description:

Inspired by Front 242, Skinny Puppy and Clock DVA, Arno and Tibor were fellow students at the Center of Electronic Music (CEM) in Arnhem, Netherlands during the mid 80’s.

After getting a record deal with the Belgian Antler Subway, and started producing their first EP, originally meant as EBM. But since they were in the middle of proceeding, they took the chance to incorporate some of those influences in their first record, ‘Force D’Inquisition’, in 1990, which became one of the earliest Dutch house records.

Track A2 is the legendary ‘Apocalypse’, which was quite a hit at the time both in the EBM and acid scene, with gentlemen like Frankie Knuckles playing it in his sets.
Arno Peeters was later part of Random XS and Urban Electro and worked solo as Spasms on Djax-Up-Beats.

Bahía Mansa – Ruralia (Florina Cassettes)

a2014741655_10

Label Description:

Some words from the artist:

My new album, “ruralia,” aligns with Florina’s vision and is inspired by Monet’s Falaise de Pourville, le matin, featured on the cover.
This creation came about during a time when I was deeply immersed in exploring the virtues of rural life as an alternative to the industrial impact on society.

This influence shaped “ruralia” into a very intimate album, embracing minimal elements to depict what would be a life away from the city.
By minimizing distractions, I aimed to achieve peace and clarity. The album embodies quietness, contemplation, and inner discovery amidst the natural world, encouraging deep thought and self-knowledge to live a simple life as a form of resistance.

*********

a call for calm
in a natural conversation
propels a sound capsule
ochre-colored

the storm rises
sings the limit of worlds
the universal ignorance
of a bird’s flight

the wind buys peace
at the price of the waves
adding to the land’s debt

the hope of a simulated city
the quiet of a gray sky
patience patience

return to calm
carnal monologue
of this geography
imaginary

—–

un appel au calme
dans une conversation naturelle
propulse une pastille de son
couleur ocre

l’orage se dresse
chante la limite des mondes
l’universelle ignorance
d’un vol d’oiseau

le vent achète la paix
au prix des vagues
s’ajoute la dette du terrain

l’espérance d’une ville simulée
quiétude d’un ciel gris
patience patience

retour au calme
monologue charnel
de cette géographie
imaginaire

Yellow Swans – Out Of Practice I (Self-Released)

a3867232624_10

Label Description:

Getting back to playing was a whole thing. Neither of us had been playing much music and weren’t sure how we’d get back to it since we live pretty far apart and had opted in to playing shows. We always leaned on improvisation in our sets and our last few years were entirely improvisational, so we decided we’d create a few frameworks for playing our live gigs to give us something to lean on. In a sense, “songs” but VERRRRY loose. So here’s a tape documenting two very different versions of one of those pieces, which was based around some vague ideas and tape loops of early music fragments. We are old now, history and we wanted to play with history. L O L. Anyway, I think the music is pretty good. Not bad for a band that hasn’t recorded anything or played out in 15 years.
