The Cube Of Unknowing – Bog Summoner (Library Of The Occult)

Label Description: Renowned composer and sound artist Francis Heery, under his alias The Cube of Unknowing, announces the release of his latest sonic expedition, ‘Bog Summoner’, via Library of the Occult. This immersive electronic album blends kosmische, motorik rhythms, and spectral atmospheres, drawing listeners deep into the mysterious heart of the Irish Midlands.

A visionary in avant-garde music, Heery’s compositions have been performed by ensembles including the RTE Symphony Orchestra, Crash Ensemble, Quiet Music Ensemble, and Talujon Percussion Ensemble. With ‘Bog Summoner’, he channels his deep-rooted fascination with science fiction, occult mysticism, and bio-aesthetic philosophy into a record that pulsates with both history and otherworldly energy.

Evolving organically during the recording process, ‘Bog Summoner’ became a sprawling, shape-shifting entity. Influences range from the live recordings of Harmonia to the cosmic explorations of Tangerine Dream’s ‘Phaedra’ and ‘Rubycon’, all while steeped in what Heery describes as ‘Bog Gothic’—an eerie evocation of East County Galway’s mist-laden bogs and buried histories.

One key track, ‘Uí Máine’, takes its name from the medieval Irish clan that ruled the region. Heery was particularly intrigued by the 16th-century alchemist Edward Kelley’s claim to be a descendant of the Uí Máine, weaving an esoteric connection between occultism and the forgotten landscapes of rural Ireland. ‘Bog Summoner’ imagines Kelley’s spectral presence lingering in the bogs, appearing to seekers and outcasts, summoning spirits among ancient burial mounds.
Adding another layer of inspiration, the album draws from Ithell Colquhoun’s evocative writings on Ireland, particularly ‘The Crying of the Wind’, reinforcing Heery’s exploration of landscape as a portal to the arcane.

Neil Mason of Moonbuilding magazine describes ‘Bog Summoner’ as “a kosmische transmission from a distant realm, fed through a Berlin School conduit. Heery teases suspense with hypnotic, slow-burning tension, maintaining a delicate yet relentless momentum for the entire 45-minute duration.”
With ‘Bog Summoner’, The Cube of Unknowing crafts a soundscape that bridges past and future—an astral ritual invoking the echoes of lost worlds through dense synth textures, undulating rhythms, and cosmic reverberations.

Ivy Chalice – Noctifer (Library Of The Occult)

a2738477794_10

Label Description:

Ivy Chalice release their highly anticipated follow up to last years ‘Nachtmahr’, with Noctifer, on Library of the Occult Records. Drawing inspiration from classic cinema and the evocative sounds of the 1960s and 70s, Noctifer blends acoustic textures and ethereal vocals with a shadowy electronic edge, crafting a musical experience that is as haunting as it is hypnotic.

Noctifer (“bringer of night”) is an album of shadowed landscapes and eerie tales. Ivy Chalice conjures a soundscape where dark folklore, dreamlike acoustics, and modern electronic elements meet. The album’s narrative threads echo the haunting charm of films like The Blood on Satan’s Claw and The Wicker Man, as well as the spectral allure of British folk revival acts.

Maria Perez Query of Hellebore writes:
“The dense, dreamy atmosphere conjured by Ivy Chalice reaches its zenith in “Der Wald, Die Spiegelwelt,” which has echoes of the classic folk horror series Moondial (1988). Ethereal and eerie, Noctifer feels like wandering into the woods to find a ruined chapel, like opening a gate that leads to a secret realm.”

Featuring tracks that balance fragility and foreboding, Noctifer is both an homage to and a reinvention of folk horror soundscapes. The combination of acoustic instrumentation and shadowy electronic textures offers a contemporary twist on timeless themes of nature, ritual, and the unknown.

SABIWA, Queimada, Nathan L. – Sons of _ (Phantom Limb)

a3725386344_10

Label Description:

“Provides footholds like glimpses of truth, then snatches them away…Enjoy the experience of being dislodged.”
A Closer Listen

Rising Taiwanese sonic and visual experimentalist SABIWA teams up with Italian duo Queimada and Nathan L. for the release of strange and beguiling new EP Sons of _, marrying disembodied field recordings and processed orchestral instrumentation with coruscating noise and half-forgotten Taiwanese folklore.

“We wanted to achieve a unique sonic experience that gently pulls listeners into a calm, introspective realm of sound, visuals, and hidden stories,” write the trio. All based in mainland Europe, but bringing divergent and itinerant influences to the mix, SABIWA, Queimada, and Nathan L. each represent complementary elements to the deep and unpredictable elixir that makes up their collaborative debut Sons of _. The record is characterised by SABIWA’s heavily processed singing voice fluttering and glitching in strange, coded languages within a heavenly but deserted CGI cathedral rendered from crashed software. Italian brothers Marco and Lorenzo Colocci (Queimada and Nathan L. respectively) are both well versed musicians, exposed to classical schools as well as the outerspheres of experimental music. Their contribution to Sons of _ can be felt in its no-input thumps, its crawling of mechanical insects, its devastating waves of crushing noise. Together, the trio push at sonic realities and temporal structure to form an indecipherable messaging. “A rediscovery of a new self, unrecognisable from its former shape,” they offer.

Key moment “Nothing blue – 無憂無慮” feels culled from a dreamlike, alien mythology, fugged into disparate and divergent worlds as if the dust from a newly-collapsed Tower of Babel has still not settled. The track loops and swoons with raw distortion, James Bond fever dream strings, and SABIWA’s mystifying vocal experimentation before introducing a lolloping rhythm of church bells and crackling, staticky snare. Next, “What is true is not true -無明大夢” almost proceeds like a song. It has a recognisable rhythm – rare for Sons of _ – and a processed vocal loop maintains a riverine melodic flow. But throughout, its foundations splinter and shiver under the weight of malfunctioning modems screaming to escape. Later, “The Root of Unwilled Existence – 無自性” breaks apart under its own weight. Clouds of noxious gas swallow whole its harmonic voicing as mischievous transversal pixies haunt a psychedelic, reverberant inner chamber.

Ben Kelly is one of the UK’s most influential designers. Kelly is best known for his interior design of the legendary nightclub, The Haçienda in Manchester. His practice has produced influential work for 180 Studios, Virgil Abloh, The Sex Pistols, The V&A, Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren and Factory Records.

The Vinyl Factory first collaborated with Kelly to commission and stage his installation RUIN, produced in collaboration with Virgil Abloh, at 180 Studios in 2017. 180 Studios subsequently staged Kelly’s Columns installation as part of the exhibition Future Shock (2022), the soundtrack to which, composed by electronic musician Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner, is released here.

An organic shaped die cut peephole is cut into the front of the sleeve as a homage to Marcel Duchamp’s final work Étant donnés (1946-1966) – a gateway to another world. The peephole reveals one of Ben’s orange columns and plinth with a gloss varnish on a black background. On removing the inner sleeve the statement: “CONCERNING THE BUILDING OF THESE COLUMNS WE HAVE NO CERTAIN NEWS” is revealed, printed on a Pigeon Blue background.

The rear of the inner sleeve contains a printed transcription of a conversation surreptitiously recorded via dictation, complete with mistakes and mishearing’s, between Kelly and Scanner. The transcription has produced a mashup version of the true conversation which has been printed in full. Across the two sides of the inner sides of the gatefold, a vertical full colour printed collage of columns, taken from the FALLING COLUMNS digital installation.

The rear of the sleeve contains a printed essay by Brian Dillon, beginning with a quote from Francesco Colonna, Hypnerotomachia (1499). This essay was originally commissioned by Ben to accompany his COLUMNS installation in 2022. A Chocolate Grinder is printed on the silver mirror board on the rear of the gatefold above the VF logo.

Scanner’s work traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, and image. His diverse body of work includes soundtracks for films, performances, radio, dance, theatre and site-specific intermedia installations. Committed to working with cutting edge practitioners he has collaborated with Carsten Nicolai, Wayne MacGregor, Laurie Anderson, Hussein Chalayan, and Mike Kelley.

Various Artists – paisajes en tundra

a3851865580_10

Label Description:

(ENG)

Glacier retreat, while a natural phenomenon in some cases, has been exacerbated by various human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation and intensive agriculture. The accelerated melting of ice leads to a series of catastrophic consequences and irreversible effects that are impacting both natural ecosystems and human life.

This album was created as an initiative to raise awareness of this phenomenon, as well as to raise funds to support Glaciares Chilenos (www.glaciareschilenos.org), a Chilean NGO founded with the aim of educating and protecting the more than 26 thousand glaciers located in the national territory, through the development of educational programs and visibility of scientific content on glaciers.

In keeping the editorial line of the previous benefit compilation “migraciones”, Bahía Mansa decides to expand the previous sound palette and invites 10 other global artists to participate in this collaborative instance as part of the annual support for ecological causes.

All proceeds will be donated directly to Glaciares Chilenos (NGO).

(SPA)

Thank you infinitely to all the artists who contributed their talents and passion to this project, making it possible to extend this important message!

plateau – Kushbush + Music for Grassbars (Artoffact Records)

a1823263399_10

Label Description:

PlatEAU’s 2007 release, Kushbush, is a psychedelic, dub-infused electronic album that blends ambient soundscapes with heavy, bass-driven grooves. The project, spearheaded by cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy and Phil Western, delves into themes of altered states and introspection, combining lush synth textures, hypnotic rhythms, and distorted samples to create a trippy, immersive listening experience. With its laid-back, smoked-out vibes, Kushbush is a sonic journey through hazy atmospheres and experimental beats, reflecting the duo’s unique fusion of industrial influences and chillout music aesthetics.

Music for Grassbars, released by platEAU in 1997, serves as the debut album for the duo, laying the groundwork for their distinctive sound that would evolve in later works like Kushbush. This album explores a more minimalistic and experimental approach, characterized by downtempo rhythms, ambient textures, and an eclectic mix of organic and synthetic sounds. With its playful track titles and dub-inspired grooves, Music for Grassbars captures a sense of curiosity and exploration, offering a lo-fi, laid-back soundscape that’s equally suitable for contemplative listening or background ambiance. It’s an early testament to platEAU’s ability to blend electronic innovation with a relaxed, hazy atmosphere.
